Library Virtual Services: Textbooks and eBooks

Get a library eCard!

Apply at the participating libraries website for an eCard, which will give you access to databases, e-journals, e-books, and audiobooks!

  • New York Public Library
    • You must be geographically located within NY State to be granted a library eCard via the SimplyE app. If you have a NYPL card that has expired in the last 2 years, you can electronically renew your card for access to eBooks and databases.
  • Queens Public Library
    • You can obtain a Queens Public Library eCard by applying with any New York residential access. This will give you access to eBooks and databases available via Queens Public Library.
  • Brooklyn Public Library
    • You must be geographically located within NY State to be granted a library eCard. While applying for the card, you will be prompted to share your location via your browser to prove you are within NY State limits.

Cengage (ebooks)

Cengage is offering students on US campuses that have closed due to Covid-19 a free subscription to Cengage Unlimited through the remainder of the term, which gives them access to all Cengage ebooks and platforms.

Ebook Central

All e-books owned by the Stephen B. Luce Library through ProQuest's Ebook Central have been transitioned to unlimited access through mid-June. This means that all licenses -- including singe-user and three-user models will automatically convert to unlimited access..

Barnes and Noble/VitalSource

Barnes & Noble and VitalSource have made eTextbooks available for free for students through May 25th, 2020. Listed eligibility requirements are that students must be enrolled in course(s) that began prior to March 16, 2020, and use an institution-provided email address to create a bookshelf account.

Instruction on creating a bookshelf account that you can share with students and instructions can be found here. Once you are logged in, click on the "explore" tab in the upper left corner of the screen. Users may add up to seven titles to their account for free. There is a “counter” in the lower left corner of the Bookshelf screen to help users keep track of the number of books accessed.

Custom content, interactive content, and content used for assessment is not included. Commonly assigned materials from publishers, often referred to as “courseware” (like Pearson’s MyLab, Cengage MindTap, WileyPlus, etc.) are not included in this program.

Open Library

Open Library is a project of the Internet Archive that provides access to many public domain and out-of-print books.

Digital Public Library of America

The Digital Public Library of America brings together the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums, and makes them freely available to the world.

NCBI Bookshelf

NCBI Bookshelf offers free online access to ebooks and documents in life sciences and healthcare

Cambridge University Press

Cambridge University Press is making higher education textbooks free to access online through May 2020. All 700 textbooks, published and currently available in HTML format, are now available until the end of May, regardless of whether they were previously purchased.

“Blue Books” in History of Political Thought are all open access.

RedShelf

RedShelf is providing students no-cost access to digital textbooks for the rest of the semester. Each student may access up to seven free eBooks, and access will run through May 25th, 2020.

Harvard Business Review E-books

Through June, the library now has access to Harvard Business Review e-books. With over 600 e-books that include 400+ monographs, newly published e-books, seminal works, and 150+ article compilations of the HBR Classics series, faculty will be available to quickly provide relevant digital materials for their students. Springer

Springer has made over 450 textbooks available for free during Covid-19.
