CSE Guide

This CSE Guide is intended to provide examples of commonly used citations.

Guidelines

Below are some basic guidelines to use when formatting your research paper using CSE citation style.  However, some professors may have specific preferences when using CSE.  Make sure to follow your professor's specific guidelines over CSE recommendations.

Titles

When citing a journal, use the official abbreviation of its title.  If the journal consists of one word, do not abbreviate.

Book and article titles should have the first word capitalized; all other words in the title and sub-title should be lowercase except for proper nouns.

Authors

Authors should have their surname listed first, followed by their first initial.

CSE Citations Elements

CSE style describes three systems for references; use the style which is commonly used in your discipline:

  • Name-Year (N-Y) system
    • Uses the surname of the author and the year of publication within the text to refer to the end references
    • End references are then listed alphabetically by author and then by year.
    • The general sequence of information in the end reference is author names are followed by the year of publication followed by the title, and additional items.

In text example: Once exposed in the environment, PCBs do not readily breakdown. They are also very resistant to change, and due to this they remain in the environment for a long time (Kodavanti, 2016).

  • Citation-Sequence (C-S) system
    • Uses superscript numbers within the text to refer to the end references.
    • End references are listed in the order they are referred to in the text.
    • Subsequent citations to the same document use the same number as its initial citation.
    • the general sequence of information in the end reference is author name, title, and additional items (including year of publication).

In text example: Once exposed in the environment, PCB's do not readily breakdown1. They are also very resistant to change1,2  and due to this they remain in the environment for a long time. 3-6,
